Pep Guardiola faces an unwelcome selection headache after confirming that promising youngster Claudio Echeverri will be absent for several weeks with an ankle problem.

The Argentine midfielder, who announced himself with a spectacular free-kick goal on his maiden City start, sustained the injury during last week's emphatic 6-0 victory over Al Ain - the result that booked City's passage to the knockout rounds.

Echeverri was forced off at the interval in that match, and Guardiola has now delivered the disappointing news that the 18-year-old faces a spell on the sidelines.

"His ankle is causing him difficulties. We're looking at two to three weeks on the treatment table, which is disappointing," the City boss explained to the press ahead of Thursday's group finale against Juventus.

"I'm gutted for the lad, and for the squad as well."

The injury blow effectively ends Echeverri's involvement in the current competition, robbing City of a player who had just begun to showcase his considerable talents on the world stage.

The timing proves particularly frustrating given the midfielder's eye-catching debut performance, where his dead-ball expertise caught the attention of observers who had been eager to see what the South American prospect could offer.
