The former defender's promotion caps a remarkable journey from academy coaching to the first-team setup in the space of just months. Toure had been working with City's under-18s when three senior coaches departed the Etihad during the summer, creating an unexpected opportunity.

What started as temporary cover has transformed into a full-time position after the 43-year-old impressed Guardiola and the club hierarchy with his work alongside the defensive unit at the CWC.

Guardiola lost Carlos Vicens, Juanma Lillo, and Inigo Dominguez in quick succession, forcing a rapid backroom reshuffle, bringing in in former Liverpool duo James French and Pep Lijnders to fill the void, with Toure's appointment restoring coaching numbers to previous levels.

The timing could hardly be better for City, who struggled defensively last season. Toure's specialist knowledge and playing experience may prove vital in addressing those vulnerabilities as the club looks to bounce back.

Sporting director Hugo Viana highlighted the unique value Toure brings to the role, emphasising both his elite-level credentials and existing connection to the club.

"We're delighted to permanently add Kolo to our first team coaching staff," Viana said. "Not only does he bring his immensely precious experience at football's elite level, but he also has a deep connection with Manchester City and a deep knowledge of the Club."

The appointment strengthens the pathway between City's academy and senior squad, with Toure's youth coaching background proving particularly valuable for player development.

"We've also been hugely impressed with his work and success with our Under-18s," Viana added. "By adding him into our senior staff permanently, this will only strengthen the transition for players in our Academy into the first team."

Toure's playing career spanned 362 senior appearances across Arsenal, Liverpool and Celtic as well as City. The Ivorian centre-back was part of Arsenal's Invincibles squad and helped City claim their breakthrough Premier League title in 2012.

His coaching experience includes managing Ivory Coast's under-23 team and serving as assistant with the senior national side. However, his only spell as a head coach proved challenging - a two-month stint at Wigan Athletic in the 2022/23 season ended without a single victory in nine matches.
