Manchester City’s rollercoaster season is coming down to the wire — and it’s not quite the title charge we’ve come to expect. After a frustrating 1-1 draw at Southampton, City are now left needing at least four more points from their final two Premier League games to lock down a Champions League spot.
That makes Tuesday’s clash with Bournemouth at the Etihad an absolute must-not-lose.
Pep Guardiola had hoped to get an extra day to prepare, asking for the game to be moved to Wednesday — especially with Spurs having their own fixture moved to accommodate their Europa League final. But no such luck.
“We’ve been fighting these battles for nine years,” Pep said. “Nothing changes.”
It’s a tough ask. Bournemouth are among the most intense and physical sides in the league, and they’re still chasing a place in Europe themselves. Pep knows what’s coming — and he’s not sugar-coating it.
“We play Tuesday night against the most direct, powerful team in the league. It’s going to be a battle.”
Meanwhile, the night will be emotional for fans as it marks the final home game for Kevin De Bruyne. But Guardiola is keeping a clear head — there’s no room for sentiment when Champions League football is on the line.
“We need him. He’s not playing for nostalgia — he’s playing because he can deliver. He’s done it before, like that free kick against Palace when we were 0–2 down.”
“Kevin’s lifted 16 trophies in 10 years. Not bad, I’d say.”
So, it all comes down to this: Two games. Four points. And a farewell worthy of a club legend.
