Al Hilal are next—nineteen-time champions of Saudi Arabia and the last remaining hope from the Asian Football Confederation. It’s a first-ever meeting between two of the most decorated sides from their respective regions. But on paper, there’s only one side arriving in any kind of form.

City have looked sharp. Fluid in attack, tight in shape, and ruthless early on, having scored inside the opening ten minutes in each of their group games, Phil Foden setting the tone with a second-minute goal against Wydad AC.

Nine players have been on the scoresheet already. Erling Haaland has two—one a penalty, the other a scuffed finish from close range following a no-look ball from Matheus Nunes. It wasn’t pretty, but remarkably it was his 300th career goal all the same.

City will be without Claudio Echeverri, the 18-year-old Argentine, who scored his first goal for the club before going off with what looked like an ankle problem. Pep Guardiola expects him to miss at least another fortnight.

Al Hilal will need more than luck to get through this. They’re the only Asian side left in the competition. Urawa Red Diamonds and Ulsan HD didn’t manage a single win. Al Ain had one victory, but Al Hilal edged through with two draws on top of that.

There’s history here. Al Hilal reached the final in 2022 and gave Real Madrid a scare before going down 5–3. Only six players from that night remain, and age is beginning to tell. Their youngest starter so far is 22-year-old Marcos Leonardo, who scored one of just three goals they’ve managed this time.

Much of the squad is the wrong side of thirty. The likes of Koulibaly, Renan Lodi, Milinkovic-Savic, Mitrovic and ex-City man João Cancelo bring experience, but injuries are mounting. Neymar was a headline signing but hardly played before moving back to Santos. Now Mitrovic is struggling, and Cancelo’s minutes are being managed.

Despite a handful of academy players in the squad, Al Hilal haven’t turned to youth. With injuries creeping in and energy levels dipping, that reluctance could cost them.

For City, the task is clear. Take the game seriously, strike early again, and move one step closer to another international trophy. Guardiola will know this is no time for rotation experiments. The Juve game indicated that the rhythm is back. Now it needs to be kept.
